Balls Head Hike 2021

The Joeys went on a hike this past Sunday (23/05/2021) to Balls Head Reserve. The loop and the connected Coal Loader Link Track is about 3km in length and took about 2 hours for the Joeys to complete.

We met at the second car park area on Balls Head Drive and before we started our hike, we made up a mini first aid kit and talked about hike safety.

We then began the hike by walking along the Amphora Walk. We continued until we found a massive tree had fallen over the path. We all climbed over it and eventually reached Balls Head Drive again, which we followed until we branched off up some steps to the Midden Walk. A parent noticed a bird’s nest in a tree bordering the path.

Also on this part of the track we found an overhanging rock with a seat.

At the end of this path we sat and had a break on a nice grassy flat.

Next, we walked along Ballasters Track, stopping along the way at Fishermans Rock to take in a view of Sydney Harbour. At the end of the track we climbed some stairs back up to the Harbour View walk and stopped at an excellent lookout for a group picture.

We walked along the Isabella Brierly Track and then branched left onto the Coal Loader Link Track. Eventually we came to the massive Coal Loader Tunnel.

It was pretty dark inside. Eventually we got to the other side and climbed up to the top of the tunnel where we saw an old ship that is being restored.

Then we walked back along Balls Head Drive to our starting point.

All the Joeys who went on the hike and who also attended the hike preparation night 2 weeks before qualified for their Bushwalking Stage 1 badge. Congratulations Joeys!
